Roger Tomhave is the art fine arts coordinator for Fairfax County Public Schools. Dr. Tomhave oversees the K-12 fine art program delivered by over 1,000 certified dance, music, theatre arts, and visual arts teachers for 138 elementary schools, 25 middle schools, and 25 high schools.He is the 1999 National Supervision/Administration Art Educator of the Year, the 1998 Virginia State Art Educator of the Year, and the 1998 Southeastern Region Supervision/Administration Art Educator of the Year for the National Art Education Association. Under his tenure in Fairfax County Public School, Fairfax arts curricula were recognized for excellence by the President's Committee on the Arts and Humanities. In November 1997, the Getty Education Institute for the Arts used Fairfax County Public Schools as the model and demonstration site to train evaluators in assessing visual arts programs across the nation. From 1994 through 1997 Dr. Tomhave was selected to serve on the National Selection Committee for the Walt Disney and McDonalds Salutes the American Teacher Awards representing the National Art Education Association.
Previously, Dr. Tomhave supervised the art education student teacher program; taught methods in art education for elementary education majors; and taught coursework for art education majors, while pursuing a doctorate in curriculum and instruction at the University of Minnesota. Dr. Tomhave also was appointed as part of a staff development team for the Minnesota Consortium for Improving Visual Arts Education providing a program endorsed by the National Diffusion Network to 38 school districts.
Dr. Tomhave's research and writing in the field of arts education emphasizes multicultural approaches to curriculum, instruction, and assessment motivated by eleven years as a K-12 art teacher on the White Earth Indian Reservation of Northwestern Minnesota. The Tribal Council of the White Earth Reservation recognized Dr. Tomhave in 1989 for his outstanding contributions and dedication to the education of American Indian youth.
Dr. Tomhave earned his Doctorate and Master's Degree from the University of Minnesota, his Bachelor's degree from the University of Wisconsin.
