Bettyann Plishker is an experienced art educator and administrator who most recently served as the visual art specialist for Fairfax County Public Schools where she oversaw a K-12 Visual Arts program that served a population of over 165,000 students. Under her supervision the Art Education Program in Fairfax County Public Schools became nationally recognized by the National Art Education Association and by the President’s Committee on the Arts and the Humanities for its exemplary art curriculum and arts advocacy initiatives. She developed a Great Beginnings training program for first year art teachers ensuring their success in the pivotal first year of teaching. In addition, she has served on the Board of the Virginia Art Education Association (VAEA) and in 2005 she was selected as the Virginia Supervision and Administration Art Educator of the Year by VAEA. Ms. Plishker has presented at state and national art education conferences on a variety of topics including “Curriculum Connection Models”, “Effective Staff Development,” and “Conquering Mediocrity.” She also serves as the curriculum specialist for the University of Maryland Baltimore County Mexican Art and Culture in an Intercultural Perspective program which takes teachers of Spanish, social studies and art to Mexico to study the art and culture of the country.
Ms. Plishker earned her B.A. in Art Education from Rutgers University, New Brunswick, New Jersey, and her Master’s Degree in Art Education from the California College of the Arts, Oakland, California. She has taught art at all levels, K-12, and for the California College of the Arts, the University of Maryland, and George Mason University.
