Susan Castellana has dedicated herself to teaching others. Both professionally and as a volunteer, she has been committed to sharing her knowledge and love of the arts with her students. Susan received a B.F.A. in Crafts and an M.F.A. in Art Education with a concentration in Fiber from Carnegie Mellon University.
Susan’s experience includes teaching in public and private schools, adult education, pre-college and at the university level. In addition, she has conducted numerous fiber art and basketry workshops around the region.
In Loudoun County, she developed a high school art history curriculum with a parallel studio program and was instrumental in designing the elementary reading program called: STAR (Super Terrific Awesome Readers). She has presented at the VAEA Conference and was a recipient of a Washington Post Grant in Education. Recently, Susan has been a university supervisor for Virginia Commonwealth University, George Washington University and George Mason University.
In addition to her work in education, she has worked as a designer in the floral industry. The owner of Fine Vines, which she established in 1975, Susan has created high-quality crafts for sale in local interior design shops.
Susan Castellana’s sculptural fiber work is focused in two areas; whimsical, multi-technique pieces and works that investigate forms using natural materials. She has been involved with numerous crafts and fiber organizations both locally and nationally.
